Who we are
PlaceGuess (placeguess.com) is a geography guessing game run by an independent developer based in Denmark. For anything privacy-related, contact privacy@placeguess.com.
What we collect
You can play without creating an account. Your browser keeps a small local list of the rounds you have already played, so you don't get repeats. When you finish a game, an anonymous player profile is created so your scores and results can be saved and shown in your own stats. Anonymous profiles carry no name or contact details and are hidden from the public leaderboards.
For each finished game we store the score, which locations were shown, the region you picked, where on the world map you placed your guess, and when you played. Your map guesses are clicks on a map of the world — the game never asks for or accesses your device's location.
If you create an account, we additionally store:
- Email address and password — for signing in. The password is stored only as a secure hash; we never see it. If you sign in with Google instead, we receive your name and email address from Google — the email becomes your account email, there is no password, and we use nothing else from your Google account.
- Username — shown on the public leaderboards together with your scores, so pick one that doesn't identify you if you prefer. Your earlier anonymous games become part of your account history.
We do not store your IP address, and we use no advertising trackers. To see how many people play we use Vercel Web Analytics, a privacy-friendly page-view counter: it sets no cookies, stores no IP addresses, and cannot follow you across other sites. Our hosting providers keep standard, short-lived server logs.
Why we collect it
We use this data solely to run the game: saving your scores and stats, keeping you signed in, and showing leaderboards (performance of our contract with you), plus abuse prevention and aggregate statistics about which rounds are too hard or too easy (our legitimate interest). We never sell data or use it for advertising.
Cookies and local storage
We use only strictly necessary storage: a session key that identifies your player profile, and a local list of rounds you have played. No tracking or advertising cookies — which is why there is no cookie banner.
Who processes it
Your data is stored and processed by these service providers on our behalf, under their GDPR data-processing agreements:
- Supabase — database and authentication (profiles, scores)
- Vercel — website hosting and cookieless page-view analytics
- Cloudflare — serving the location images
- jsDelivr and esm.sh — content delivery networks that serve the map and database libraries the game runs on
Where these providers process data outside the EU, transfers are covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
Account data and game results are kept until you delete your account. Games played anonymously are kept unless you ask us to delete them.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask for access to, correction of, a copy of, or deletion of your personal data. To delete your account and everything tied to it, email privacy@placeguess.com from the address you signed up with — we will delete it within 30 days. Deleting your account removes your profile and all your games and guesses.
You can also complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet, datatilsynet.dk).
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update this page and the date at the top.
